Bixby Bridge

Bixby Bridge

If you're planning a drive down California's Highway 1, make sure your drive takes you across Bixby Bridge. It's one of the most iconic landmarks of Northern California, Big Sur and the Pacific Coast.  It has been a while since Alfie and I have been to Big Sur, so we took the kids there in November and had a great time enjoying the fresh air, the ocean view, and the sunset.

Bixby Bridge is about 100 miles (2 hours drive) from Silicon Valley.  Getting there is pretty easy: just take Highway 101 South until it turns into Highway 1, then keep driving until you find yourself on the bridge.  Before you hit Bixby Bridge, you'll find yourself crossing another bridge first: Rocky Creek Bridge.  Rocky Creek Bridge is almost identical to Bixby Bridge, it's just a bit shorter.  It's actually a good thing that you do, because Bixby Bridge is just a few miles south, so once you cross Rocky Creek Bridge, you'll know that Bixby Bridge is coming up soon, and you'll be prepared to slow down and stop at the turnout to take some photos.  The turnout is on the west side, but if there are no more parking spots, you may be forced to park on the other side of the road.  BE CAREFUL!

Note, there aren't any barriers around the cliff's edge, so you really have to be careful, especially with kids.

The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, on a clear day. The views of the bridge and of the Pacific Ocean are absolutely spectacular.

When you sit on the rocks and watch the sun set and feel the win and the sun on your face, boy oh boy does it feel good to be alive.
